Growing up in the inner city of Atlanta, GA, the odds were stacked against me and my peers. It was drug infested, poverty stricken, and not many graduated from high school. The chances of making it out was slim. Statistics said if you were a black female you would become pregnant, drop out of school and live off of government assistance. The black male would find themselves in prison, or worst, dead. This was a vicious cycle that I saw throughout my neighborhood.
I did become a teen mother, I dropped out of school, and lived off of government assistance. I lived at home with my mom and I felt hopeless. I had become what society had said would happen to me, but there was something inside of me that just would not allow me to become comfortable or settle for what society said my fate and the fate of my children would be. I went back to school and got my GED. Then, I received my certificate in Phlebotomy. I found employment at one of the top hospitals in the city and was able to move into a better neighborhood and became financially fit. I did not need government assistance anymore. My son became the first college graduate in my family, he received his degree in Sociology, and prison nor death became his fate based on what statistics said.
I furthered my education and received my Associates in Human Relation and my certification as a Life Coach. Never allow anyone or anything tell you what you can’t do or become.
